We are looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer for a well known, international manufacturers based in Plymouth. This is a day shift role, and they are happy to consider a range of skill sets.

The Engineering team consists of program management, systems design, hardware, firmware and mechanical teams; supporting the product development team and cross functionally with operations teams (manufacturing, supply-chain, quality, marcoms and customer services).

Our program of new product development is a demanding and exciting opportunity to shape the heating controls of the future.  The candidate would be involved in a range of product development activities from initial prototyping and concept generation through to new product development and product evolution and maintenance.

A typical project would involve the set-up of a core project team and using the company’s phased development procedure to plan, schedule and execute the deliverables of the project; from concept creation, production of prototypes through to manufacture.  Using CAD tools to create concept designs and then detail designs; holding appropriate design reviews with manufacturing, tool room and product marketing.  Liaison with suppliers and toolmakers in different geographical locations e.g. China is often required, so good communication skills are important.  For verification of the design test plans are created along with the design of any related equipment in order to conduct any necessary tests before the design is released for tooling; liaising with the toolmaker while tooling is in production and performing validation tests on production parts.  The candidate will assist in the creation of a product technical file; writing test reports, providing product validation evidence and will continue to provide core support as necessary to operations after product release.

The role is based in Plymouth, UK with occasion travel (<5%).

Desired Qualifications:

  • Degree BSc/MEng in relevant mechanical engineering / industrial design discipline
  • Knowledge of design for plastic injection moulding
  • Knowledge of modern manufacturing techniques
  • Knowledge of design for manufacture and assembly
  • Knowledge of usability factors and human interaction
  • Skilled in 3D/2D CAD
  • Knowledge of relevant engineering standards for engineering drawing and design
  • Sound knowledge of engineering materials
  • Knowledge of FEA techniques and FEA tools
  • Knowledge with CGI and rendering techniques
  • Knowledge rapid prototyping techniques
