Job Description

We are recruiting for an Interim Management Accountant to assist the Head of Finance in a charity based in Plymouth. This will be a 4 month fixed term contract but there is potential for this to be extended with the needs of the business. You must have recent relevant experience in order to be able to hit the ground running in addition to a qualification such as AAT L4, CIMA, CCAB, or actively working towards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Preparation of accurate monthly management accounts with rolling forecasts by the required deadlines, in conjunction with budget holders and other departmental colleagues as appropriate.
  • Preparation of the annual budgets and medium-term financial forecasts, in conjunction with budget holders.
  • Identify, prepare and post monthly and quarterly journals and adjustments in order to report on an accurate financial position at the end of each period, including accruals, prepayments, depreciation, stock adjustments, etc.
  • Preparing the year-end accounts for reporting to management and trustees and ensuring the Finance Team meets the requirements for statutory reporting and audit, communicating with both internal and external stakeholders as appropriate.
  • Maintain the Fixed Asset Register to ensure compliance with current financial standards and related accounting entries are prepared posted and reconciled by required timescales.
  • Development and maintenance of a system to enable the apportionment of support or overhead costs to inform both internal financial reporting and decision making and to fulfil statutory accounting requirements.
  • Undertake the Finance checks to ensure that the monthly payroll to be authorised, correctly reflects payments due to staff.
  • Preparing and posting the monthly payroll costing file to the finance system ensuring costs are allocated to appropriate nominal accounts.
  • Reconciling the payroll control accounts and payroll nominals to payroll reports on a monthly basis.
  • Prepare the VAT return for review by the Head of Finance to meet statutory deadlines.
  • Review and monitor partial exemption calculations / statistics
  • Advise colleagues on VAT issues to ensure compliance with HMRC regulations.
  • Prepare and monitor cash flow information, along with timely regular or ad hoc financial reports as appropriate.

Essential Experience / Qualifications and Attributes Required:

  • A financial qualification e.g., AAT, CCAB or equivalent (or actively working towards), with evidence of continued professional development.
  • A recent practical understanding of management accounting principles and techniques.
  • Advanced knowledge of using financial information packages and experience of developing and maintaining accounting systems (PS Financials would be an advantage).
  • Ability to work to regular deadlines, liaising with team members to ensure that outputs are produced accurately and on time.
  • Strong Excel skills (e.g. ability to do lookups, pivot tables & graphs).
  • Able to communicate complex financial matters to non-finance people.
  • Experienced in accounting for VAT and completion of VAT returns.
  • Previous experience within the Charity Sector would be desirable although not essential.
