Job Description

Seeking an experienced Linux Engineer for a long standing, well sought after company in Plymouth. You will be working within the IT Technology Group, alongside the acting Linux Support & Development Officer in the; design, development, management, monitoring and support of the Linux infrastructure and networking facilities.

You will be a big part of the development of new facilities and will help improve efficiencies, for example; improvements to the virtualisation infrastructure, software versioning and distributed file systems. Responsibilities

  • Provide support and guidance to the Linux Community (primarily Fedora/centosRed Hat based)
  • Assist with the monitoring of the Linux / Networking hardware (servers, workstations, storage, switches etc.) and software
  • Resolve Linux related hardware / software problems, liaising with 3rd parties
  • Provide the primary backup support role for both the Linux and Windows environments
  • Cultivate and evolve Linux developments (virtualisation infrastructure, ownCloud, Git repositories, distributed file systems etc.) to provide new efficiencies and facilities
  • Manage, develop and maintain both the physical and wireless network infrastructure, including eduroam
  • Provide scripting solutions to automate or improve functionality
  • Provide support for PML’s HPC community
  • Maintain a high level of knowledge of the Windows infrastructure in order to provide a medium level of support when required

  • Liaise with 3rd parties like Dell
  • Programming (Bash/Python/Ansible)
  • Managing virtual machines (Ovirt/Esxi)
  • General maintenance of IT Systems (IPMI/User accounts etc.)

About You

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in Linux Administration
  • Technically able with a spread of skills that can be adapted / developed including installation, configuration, updates within a networked environment and client-server relationships
  • Possess excellent communication and inter-personal skills (oral and written) that can be varied to suit a wide range of customers
  • Ability to focus despite frequent and varied interruptions
  • Programming ability, preferable Python, Bash and optionally Perl
  • Proven ability to roll out programs, updates and fixes with minimal disruption plus hands on hardware minor part replacements
  • Good organisational skills including the ability to prioritise and plan tasks and time
  • Able to work on own initiative where required
  • Desirable: An understanding of NIS and LDAP, distributed file systems (e.g. NFS, glusterfs, CephFS), automated software updates, NAGIOS and/or Zabbix, Wiki, eduroam, version control software and configuration management.
  • Desirable: Experience of oVirt, ownCloud, HPC and/or Grid Computing
